It’s our intent for our school, Gunnison Martial Arts, to be the Tang Soo Do leader in Western Colorado, providing a holistic representation of the values of our Korean martial arts founder, Hwang Kee, and showing how the foundation and roots of Tang Soo Do techniques and postures, as identified by the founders, can be performed 300 years later. The school preserves a deep heritage that transects all cultures and ideological systems and looks to the core of what inspires us to do our best.
There is a process of respect and loyalty to your country and the country of art’s origin, to the founders of the art, and to our instructors, before every class. We are a traditional martial arts school, with a Moo Do action philosophy of body, mind and spirit. We are not a sport – there are no winners-and-losers. Our intent is to be a martial arts school that follows the five moo do values: History, tradition, philosophy, discipline and respect, and technique. We use a time-tested system of rank progression in our teaching. Goals are set in the curriculum and class design for the individual, giving the students an environment of good role models, allowing them to see what they need to do to advance.
We are members of the World Dang Soo Union. We honor our lineage to the founder of Tang Soo Do, Hwang Kee (Chang Si Jah), and the President of the World Dang Soo Do Union, Kim Song Ki (Choeng Jae Nim). We seek to build a connection with our mind, body and traditions, while teaching skills that help build positive habits, practiced in the safety of our Do Jang and outside of the Do Jang, daily, to improve health and well-being.
To honor our Tang Soo Do legacy, our school strives for excellence. Our students take responsibility to improve their skills and gain the confidence to achieve their goals. GMA is a positive, supportive environment that promotes personal responsibility, increases self-esteem, empowering students to avoid conflict. If conflict is encountered, our students will have a posture that accepts it and deals with it, with the skills they have learned, in a way that protects themselves and others if they choose. A GMA student who continues training will gain concentration and focus and become a better practitioner and citizen in the community and country, by learning the natural ways of harmony and accomplishment, to become a resilient, compassionate, and empowered individual. If we as an organization are successful, students will recognize that being prepared and taking action are the greatest ways to avoid conflict, whether personally, physically, or socially – a Way of Success.
